Chain of Jewels - Persona Generation

Project Specs

Type of Project: Academic Team (4 People)

Role: UI/UX Designer

Length of Project: 4

Overview

Chain of Jewels was an academic project where we were tasked with designing all the UI for a GDD we were given. The user could interact with aspects we considered as part of the “Golden Path”.

Research

As apart of our assignment we were tasked with gathering 10 responses to our google form. We were instructed to not gather data from anyone related to DigiPen as that would skew our results.

Using both demographic and psychographic questions our data showed that our participants were:

  • Majority of ages 19-23 range.

  • 70% male, 24% female.

  • 64% childless, 36% parents.

  • 45% single, 25% dating, 25% married.

  • Highest Degree: 40% Bachelor. 36% High School or Equivalent. 20% Higher than Bachelor’s.

  • 60% play for 1-3 hours, 20% 4-6 hours, the rest play 7+ hours a week

Problems with v1

  • The Menu Options weren’t reading as buttons and so people didn’t understand how to interact with the menu.

  • The Menu required too many custom assets to look good. We did not have an artist, 2 designers at the time, 4 engineers.

  • Too heavy on animations, our tech team didn’t have an animation system in our custom engine at the time.

Solution:

  • Simplify, simplify, simplify

    • Use Squares for buttons, more intuitively reads as a button.

    • Limit animations to slide ins and scaling, easier to animate, just uses lerps

    • Use assets from the pack we were already using. Visual cohesion and fills in gaps of having no artists.
